by Renee Hawkley

“How do you like being married to a lawyer?” A young friend asked the question decades ago.

I admit. When I fell in love with my blue-eyed prince, a profession wasn’t on my list of priorities.

As it turned out, his professions were many and varied. Let’s see. They were:

  • Restroom janitor, daily @ 4-7 a.m. — an excuse for university students to go to bed early
  • Buffer of floors, daily @ 4-7 a.m. — his appetite and biceps increased dramatically
  • Motel sheet ironer Mon-Sat, 5-9 a.m.— he perfected singing Broadway musicals on the job
  • ‘Shopette’ gas station attendant —he brought bread and milk home ‘from the office’
  • Irrigation pipe mover — great sunrises and sunsets, but hard on the laundry detail
  • Air Force officer —unparalleled intro to fascinating people, places and cultures
  • Supply systems analyst — brought computer paper ‘scraps’ home for paper airplanes
  • Law student — compliments of the USAF Funded Legal Program
  • Circuit trial prosecutor and military judge — gone from dawn to dusk, often overseas
  • Assistant US attorney for Idaho — two-hour-a-day commute but home on weekends!
  • Private legal practice — new challenges, a move to Boise and our kids leaving the ‘nest’
  • State legislator — yes, there IS such a thing as an honest politician!
  • USAF Reserves for twenty years

As it turns out, professions come and go, but Dan Hawkley stays on as the man of my dreams. He took pride in work that               provided for his family. I think he’d say his favorite work was earning and maintaining the lasting titles ‘Sweetheart’ and ‘Dad.’

Happy Father’s Day!
