The Red Blood of Patriots

Recently, I read "The Lincoln Hypothesis" by Timothy Ballard.
This book helped me appreciate Abraham Lincoln and those who gave their lives in the Civil War so that these 47 words of the 13th Amendment could be added to The Constitution:
"Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
While reading the book, I asked myself;
Was the 13th Amendment "worth" the loss of 618,222 lives?
Do forms of "slavery" still exist in our country?
I know what my response is to those questions.
I also know that the mortar of freedom is still (until Jesus returns) the red blood of patriots.
I am grateful today for Martin Luther King, Jr. and for every soldier or law enforcement officer who has given his/her oath to, if necessary, give his/her life to defend and protect the laws of our land, The Constitution and the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States of America.
(Footnote)
*"All Civil War casualty numbers are estimates, no matter what the source. For over a hundred years the total number of dead has been accepted by most historians as 618,222, generally rounded off to 620,000. Newer estimates have put the number at about 750,000 or about 20% higher than previously approximated." Wikipedia
